Some artists we follow from afar, patiently awaiting their creations. Such is the case with singer Yasmine Kyd, a rare exception in the French music scene, who has accustomed us to a deeply humanist brand of funk and soul—rich in depth, poetry, and emotion. We first discovered her through three outstanding albums: Privacy Settings (2016) , Showtime (2018) and her previous album Night Sailin (2020).
If you appreciate artists who devote as much care to their lyrics as to their music, and whose voices carry a distinctive, compelling presence, then Yasmine Kyd’s entire discography is a must-have. More importantly, each album deserves to be listened to with the attention it demands.
Every time I hear Yasmine Kyd, I feel inspired—whether to write, create, or produce. Her vitality, her strength, her passion for the arts are both invigorating and uplifting. So when I came across news of new releases from her, I reached out. This time, there’s no new album, but rather a two-track EP. It’s short, far too short, but once again, Yasmine proves remarkable. There are few artists in France who genuinely capture my interest—only those driven by an undeniable passion, who understand that creation is not a choice but a necessity. It cannot be summoned at will; it arises from urgency. And that very urgency seems to be the creative engine behind this extraordinary artist.
Close your eyes, immerse yourself in these two songs, two rare and precious gems. Now that you know, Yasmine Kyd deserves your full attention. Buy these tracks, share them with your friends, and spread the word. I’ll admit, it took me some time to write this review, simply because, in my view, Yasmine has crafted here two of her finest songs to date.
Hydrangea Blue earns its place as an “Essential” release,these two tracks more than deserve the title.
