Vingt ans après son tout premier album (déjà sur Alligator), et trois ans déjà après son retour à maison du saurien, la fille du regretté Johnny Clyde Copeland poursuit l’entreprise de cross-over que recherche plus que jamais le boss de son label. Capté à Nashville, ce nouvel effort aligne les guests comme au ball-trap: rien moins que Steve Cropper, J.D. Wilkes à l’harmo (des Legendary Shack Shakers), le légendaire Al Perkins à la pedal-steel, Will Kimbrough à la guitare (et aux manettes), Rhiannon Giddens et Emmylou Harris aux chœurs, et deux des plus grands american songwriters actuels: John Prine (“Great Rain”) et Mary Gauthier (“Americans”, “Smoked Ham & Peaches”). Car comme son titre l’indique, depuis que Shemekia est devenue à son tour maman, il n’est pour elle moins que jamais de rigueur d’ânonner des fadaises. C’est pourquoi, par delà la traditionnelle reprise du répertoire de son défunt papa (“I Promised Myself”, avec un Cropper auquel reviennent nombre des réflexes du temps où il officiait aux côtés d’Otis Redding), Shemekia ose ainsi transposer le manifeste de Ray Davies “I’m Not Like Everybody Else” en blues mississippien. Oscillant entre new-country, rock stonien (“In The Blood of The Blues”) ou college-rock (“One I Love”), soul et blues burné, ce disque présente tous les atouts pour rafler quelques awards de plus, et rameuter à cette encore jeune diva un public plus large encore que celui du blues. Et ce, sans s’aliéner pour autant ce dernier: la recette du cross-over réussi, en somme. Faut-il rappeler que cette jeune personne s’impose plus que jamais comme l’une des plus grandes vocalistes soul-blues de sa génération?
