Red Gazelle Trio - On a Human Level

Since the disappearance of the Nordic group E.S.T., we all recognize that this genre of jazz carries a distinct sound. The Red Gazelle Trio seems to draw direct inspiration from E.S.T., though here the guitar takes the place of the piano, and the trumpet becomes the centerpiece—a chimerical exploration that, like a storyteller, hovers above the rhythmic foundation to weave tales of remarkable beauty. Borrowing from the repetitive musical theories of Philip Glass, this description might seem daunting. Yet, with a bit of distance from the works presented here, it appears that this interpretation is on point.

The Red Gazelle Trio—comprising Kristoffer Vejslev (guitar), Peter Price (double bass), and Simon Forchhammer (drums)—is joined by Ned Ferm on saxophone and Jakob Sørensen on trumpet, offering a vision of the current Nordic jazz scene. Beyond the aesthetic pursuit of intricate compositions, it is the sonic qualities and ingenious musical arrangements that set the tone for this oeuvre.

This album delves into universal themes such as life, death, love, joy, and sorrow. “I wrote the pieces on this album over four years, beginning during the COVID-19 pandemic with introspective and somber tracks like Murky Waters, and ending with pieces imbued with joy and innocence, inspired by my anticipation of becoming a father. One such piece, Punktum—the Danish word for the punctuation mark ‘period’—refers to the size of my unborn son at the time,” shares Kristoffer Vejslev.

With its sublime melodies and captivating rhythms, the lyrical compositions of On A Human Level transport the listener into a rich and varied musical universe. The music transitions from expansive, majestic landscapes to tightly orchestrated passages, showcasing bold solo flights and inspired improvisations.

It has taken until 2025 to gain a clear perspective on the COVID-19 pandemic, whose mismanagement in Europe—both politically and socially—effectively sealed the project of a society where freedom of speech and press are tightly controlled, fostering a singular mindset. Yet, paradoxically, the enforced pause in creation has led to a resurgence of vitality, often channeled through platforms like Zoom during months of confinement. Inevitably, this introspection among artists aligns even less with imposed norms, leading to an explosion of unbridled creativity that today brings us masterpieces such as this one.

The Red Gazelle Trio has existed since its three members took their first steps in the world of jazz, developing deep musical bonds and an almost telepathic connection. They have established themselves on the Nordic jazz scene with two critically acclaimed albums, international radio play, placements on Spotify editorial playlists like Jazz X-Press, Jazz Today, and Destination: Jazz, and extensive tours throughout Denmark.

Departing from the traditional trio format for the first time, the music of On A Human Level was written and arranged with the unique sounds and personalities of Jakob Sørensen and Ned Ferm in mind.

For all lovers of beautiful music, journeys, stories, and novels—those for whom musical notes carry as much meaning and depth as written words—this album’s place among our “Essentials” will come as no surprise.
