Pete McCann – Without Question (FR review)

However, if you’re not familiar with this guitarist yet, here’s some information extracted from his biography: Originally from Eau Claire, Wisconsin, jazz guitarist Pete McCann has been an integral part of the New York jazz scene for over 30 years. His new recording, “Without Question” (his seventh as a leader), will be released in August 2023. McCann has played and/or recorded with Kenny Wheeler, Dave Liebman, Lee Konitz, The Manhattan Transfer, Patti Austin, Brian Blade, Bobby Previte, Grace Kelly, the Mahavishnu Project, and the Maria Schneider Orchestra.
Let me give you an overview of this artist, as this album is undoubtedly exceptional with extremely rich compositions that demand musicians of the highest caliber to achieve such a result. The line-up includes Pete McCann on electric and acoustic guitar, Steve Wilson on alto and soprano saxophone, Henry Het on piano and Rhodes, Matt Pavolka on acoustic and electric bass, and Mark Ferber on drums.
Once again, this album benefits from beautiful writing. However, due to its style, it is quite easy to dive into and appreciate its subtleties. The balance between the musicians is perfect, and in my opinion, it will be hard for you to stay seated without wanting to dance if you experience it live. That’s the magic of this album – it is intellectually profound in terms of composition and the musicians’ playing, while being enjoyable for the listener or spectator. Imagine for a moment a jazz guitarist with the fiery spirit of Van Halen, and that’s exactly what Pete McCann embodies.
What stands out in this album is undoubtedly a form of inner happiness from Pete. His musical composition encompasses everything he loves about his instrument. And if you purchase this album, you’ll see that it caters to all tastes to the point of getting lost. But what a pleasure it is to listen to such a guitarist. I found myself getting caught up in the game on the track “Lost City,” imagining his way of striking the guitar strings with both strength and delicacy, with remarkable precision. The same goes for every musician on this album. In fact, I ended up completely exhausted by the end of this album, having given such attention to each track.
“Without Question” maintains a perfect balance throughout. While the album cover may appear simple, it actually conceals a true treasure, making it one of the most beautiful jazz albums of 2023. That’s why the editors of Bayou Blue Radio and Paris Move have deemed it an “essential” addition to their collection.
