Paul Taylor – It’s a Brand New DAy

Paul Taylor has been a shining star on California’s Smooth Jazz radio scene for over a decade, and his latest album, It’s a Brand New Day, is poised to reach the top of the charts once again. This marks the 13th album from the renowned saxophonist, and from the very first listen, it follows all the hallmarks of smooth jazz, establishing itself as an instant classic within the genre.

The number thirteen has long been shrouded in mysticism regarded by some cultures as an omen of misfortune, while others see it as a sacred harbinger of renewal.

For Paul Taylor, his eagerly awaited new release, It’s a Brand New Day, represents his thirteenth studio album as a bandleader and his first under the Shanachie label. A charismatic yet humble artist, Taylor reflects: “This album marks a new chapter for me, as it is my first recording in three years. The title expresses my desire to offer my fans a sense of optimism as we embrace each new day.”

Over the years, Paul Taylor has built an enviable career, punctuated by numerous Billboard No. 1 hits and collaborations with a diverse array of artists, including Regina Belle, Maxi Priest, Peabo Bryson, Keiko Matsui, The Rippingtons, Peter White, Euge Groove, Michael Lington, Jamie Jones, and Marion Meadows. “I simply love creating and composing my own music. It’s what brings me the greatest joy, and that passion never fades,” he confesses. Danny Weiss, Vice President of Shanachie’s Jazz division, adds: “I have admired Paul’s work since his earliest recordings. His phrasing and tone are extraordinary. Paul Taylor is a true icon, and his status is well deserved.”

Having followed Paul Taylor’s work since the early 2000s, I find it fascinating to witness the evolution of his compositional style, which has grown immensely over the years.

This album, in particular, is one where he channels his deepest passion, crafting melodies of exquisite beauty. His collaborations with the aforementioned artists have consistently showcased his originalityeach time, he has enriched their music with a distinct hue of his own.

Once again, Taylor joins forces with his longtime collaborator Dino Esposito (Jeff Lorber, Wayman Tisdale, Walter Beasley, Kim Waters), with whom he has worked for nearly three decades. Together, they have co-written several tracks, including the enchanting Forever More, a collaboration with the legendary Barry Eastmond (Aretha Franklin, Whitney Houston, Anita Baker, Britney Spears, Barry White, Chaka Khan). The track’s irresistible bassline and hypnotic groove immediately captivate the listener. “Dino and Barry are more than just colleagues; they are dear friends,” Taylor shares. “We push each other to new heights. They give me the space to express myself while bringing their own expertise to the table.”

While this album does not seek to revolutionize the genre, one cannot deny that Paul Taylor delivers near perfection here, with meticulously crafted melodies and top-tier arrangements. It even invites listeners to revisit his earlier works, as he has always been a devoted saxophonist, shaping the unique sound that defines him today. It’s a Brand New Day stands as an essential album—because in the world of smooth jazz, not every record reaches such heights. Only the greatest artists achieve this level of mastery.
