Moppa Elliott - Advancing On A Wild Pitch - Disasters Vol II

On a rather classic setup, Moppa Elliott on bass, Charles Evans on baritone saxophone, Sam Kulik on trombone, Danny Fox on piano, and Christian Coleman on drums, an astonishing album, which is the second album of this quintet based on Moppa Elliott’s compositions. Clearly, the source of these compositions revisits the history of jazz by adding an edgy touch that makes this project particularly modern. The art of the bass/drums interplay seems to be the driving force behind these compositions’ foundation, thus endorsing the classic form. Therefore, one should look further towards the other instrumentalists, for whom the writing of melodic lines becomes the focal point of an elaborate exploration of musical themes and their variations.
A classic form of jazz is revisited, oh Be-Bop, how it captures us! Elliott never falls into simplicity; he utilizes the driving force of his extensive knowledge to immerse us in his universe. It’s probably not too late, considering the admiration he has for this era. However, what a pleasure it is when a classic form of jazz is played in this manner, as we all need to reconnect with a musical past that has contributed so much to our culture.
It should be said that Moppa Elliott is also a teacher, instructing music at the Information Technology Highschool in Long Island (NY), where even today, both a classic form of jazz and an ultra-contemporary form coexist. This album is recommended to all those who appreciate a classic form of jazz, as it represents the best of its kind, or to jazz students who can find here both skill and a source of inspiration.
