Mafalda Minnozzi, of Italian origin and deeply passionate about Brazilian culture, has long called Brazil home. Produced by her collaborator of three decades, jazz guitarist Paul Ricci, her latest album—though far from a collection of original works—shines with such high-quality production that it emerges as a delightful gem, immersing listeners in an infinite softness.
Minnozzi is a nomadic artist with three primary bases. She performs regularly in New York, often returns to her native Italy to grace some of the country’s most renowned jazz festivals, and has cultivated a prolific career in Brazil, where she has been a long-time resident. There, she has recorded over 20 albums and collaborated with luminaries like Milton Nascimento, João Bosco, and Leny Andrade, among others. Her impressive list of collaborators also includes celebrated artists such as Helio Alves, Don Byron, Joe Locke, Dave Liebman, Michael Wolff, and John Patitucci.
Notably, Mafalda Minnozzi is an extraordinary interpreter, capable of bringing fresh surprises to even the most iconic songs, such as Corcovado, with her unique vision. Her blend of jazz and the musical traditions of Italy, the United States, Brazil, France, and Naples allows her to reach a broad and diverse audience in some of the world’s most prestigious venues.
RIOFONIC is Minnozzi’s tribute to the music, the band, and the people of Rio, who have profoundly shaped her artistry over the years. Through her elegant interpretations, emotionally charged performances, and sophisticated interplay with top-tier musicians, RIOFONIC stands out as one of Brazil’s finest musical offerings of the 21st century.
What I particularly admire about this album is its ability to sidestep the clichés of Brazilian music. Ricci’s jazz-infused arrangements provide a solid foundation for Mafalda Minnozzi, who highlights her vocal nuances with remarkable sensitivity. This album will undoubtedly intrigue anyone studying or drawn to this genre—whether for its vocal prowess or its intricate arrangements. Regularly performing in New York and at major Italian festivals, Minnozzi brings a seasoned maturity to her art, striking an impeccable balance between restraint and expressiveness. Her placement—on or between musical notes—is nothing short of masterful, elevating the work to an art form.
As the album unfolds, Minnozzi takes her time to reveal the depth of her artistry. While her Italian heritage is evident in her accent, it adds to the album’s charm, particularly on evocative tracks like Téléphone. Yes, this album holds delightful surprises, and I am all the more impressed knowing how challenging it is to produce 14 high-quality tracks that keep listeners engaged from start to finish.
Ultimately, this album offers a set that perfectly mirrors what one might experience at a live festival. It’s impossible to grow bored with such a work; at worst, it might elicit a few smiles, which, in today’s world, is no small achievement. RIOFONIC has rightfully earned its place on our list of “Essential Albums of 2025.”
