Kemuel Roig Comes Into His Own on 3Discovery, Vol.1
Some albums introduce a virtuoso. Others reveal an unmistakable artistic identity. 3Discovery, Vol.1 accomplishes both. With this remarkable debut from his new trio, Cuban pianist and composer Kemuel Roig steps beyond a career spent supporting some of the biggest names in Latin jazz to present a musical vision that is entirely his own.
Many listeners will already recognize Roig from his eight years touring with Arturo Sandoval or from performances alongside artists such as Al Di Meola, Isaac Delgado, Brian Lynch, Giovanni Hidalgo and Aymée Nuviola. Those collaborations established him as one of the most respected pianists on the scene. 3Discovery, Vol.1, however, is something different. It is the sound of an artist no longer defined by the company he keeps, but by the originality of the music he creates.
Joining Roig are fellow Cuban musicians Samuel Burgos on bass and Juan Armando Diaz on drums, performing a program composed entirely of Roig’s original works. Original is hardly an overstatement. This is sophisticated world jazz infused with Afro Cuban traditions, music that is as intellectually ambitious as it is emotionally engaging. It honors tradition while refusing to be confined by it, embracing the harmonic language of contemporary jazz without ever losing sight of its cultural roots.
From the opening moments, the listener instinctively tries to absorb every detail. Trio recordings often leave enough sonic space for each instrument to be followed with ease, but that is not the case here. Intricate rhythmic patterns intertwine with equally elaborate piano and bass lines that frequently seem to sing in unison before suddenly diverging in unexpected directions. The complexity is undeniable, yet the music never feels academic or self conscious. Instead, every twist serves a larger musical conversation.
Rather than becoming overwhelmed, the listener gradually surrenders to the experience, happily losing themselves inside compositions that constantly reveal new layers. Each return uncovers fresh harmonic colors, hidden rhythmic accents or subtle exchanges between the three musicians. It is the kind of album that rewards close listening without ever demanding it.
The vitality of the project has not gone unnoticed. Pianist Michel Camilo, a longtime friend and admirer who contributes the album’s liner notes, captures Roig’s achievement perfectly: “His contemporary approach to harmony and jazz language breathes new life into tradition, while the empathetic interplay within the trio creates a vibrant musical conversation that surprises and delights at every turn.”
Complex music is often mistaken for emotionally distant music, but Roig proves exactly the opposite. Sophistication never comes at the expense of joy. Every composition offers memorable melodic ideas, no matter how adventurous the harmonic landscape becomes. Take “Conga Jazz,” where the rhythmic drive immediately commands attention, yet beneath its intricate architecture lies an irresistible melody that practically invites movement. Throughout the album, moments of breathtaking intensity are balanced by passages of remarkable lyricism, warmth and poetic restraint.
Roig has described the project’s central ambition as finding the perfect balance between virtuosic improvisation and physical enjoyment. “I wanted to make a record filled with improvisation, jazz, virtuosity and sophisticated arrangements,” he explains. “But I also wanted it to be accessible enough that people could dance, tap their feet and simply have fun.” That philosophy runs through every track. Drawing from an expansive palette of Cuban rhythms including conga, mambo, cha cha chá and danzón, the music frequently incorporates tumbao inspired piano figures that pull the listener ever deeper into its irresistible groove. The result is music that satisfies both the analytical ear and the instinctive desire to move.
When the trio turns to the classic “Quizás, Quizás, Quizás,” don’t expect a straightforward rendition. The melody remains instantly recognizable, but Roig quickly transforms the familiar standard into something strikingly new. Clever reharmonizations, unexpected rhythmic shifts and inventive arrangements open entirely fresh perspectives on a song that has been interpreted countless times before. It is not reinvention for its own sake, nor is it an exercise in virtuosity. Instead, it reflects the restless imagination of a composer whose ideas seem to arrive faster than they can be written down, someone who approaches even the most familiar material with genuine curiosity and fearless creativity.
Although Roig, Burgos and Diaz had shared stages in different settings before, 3Discovery marks the first time the three musicians have come together as a fully realized trio. After just two weeks of rehearsals, Roig recalls being surprised by how naturally the chemistry emerged. Burgos, whom he first met during a Miami jam session three years earlier, possesses a rare command of both the language of contemporary American jazz and the rhythmic traditions of Cuba. That dual fluency immediately convinced Roig he had found an exceptional musical partner, while Diaz provides the equally indispensable rhythmic imagination that gives the trio its remarkable elasticity. Together, the three musicians listen, react and converse with an ease that makes even the most demanding passages sound spontaneous.
Few piano trios have impressed me as much this year. What makes 3Discovery, Vol.1 so compelling is not simply its astonishing technical brilliance but its unmistakable artistic identity. The music is deeply rooted in Cuban culture while embracing the harmonic sophistication and improvisational spirit of modern American jazz. Roig’s compositions feel thoroughly contemporary, endlessly inventive and consistently engaging, yet they never lose their humanity. Every note seems guided by purpose rather than display.
With 3Discovery, Vol. 1, Kemuel Roig does far more than introduce an exceptional trio. He establishes himself as one of the most compelling compositional voices to emerge from the contemporary Latin jazz scene in recent years.
After a career spent helping shape the music of others, this album makes one thing abundantly clear: Kemuel Roig has a voice that is instantly recognizable, impossible to imitate and unquestionably deserving of the spotlight.
