Joel Goodman – An Exquisite Moment (FR review)

Composer and multi-instrumentalist Joel Goodman offers us a fascinating album that captivates us from the first few seconds. He is surrounded by a formidable team of musicians who enhance his work from the first to the last track of this album. The lineup includes Randy Brecker (flugelhorn, trumpet), Brandee Younger (harp), Lisa Fischer (vocals), John Patitucci (bass), and Philippe Saisse (piano, vibraphone, marimba), joining a top-notch core group consisting of Donny McCaslin (saxophones), Eric Harland (drums), Adam Rogers (guitar), Mino Cinelu (percussion), Scott Colley (bass), and Joel Goodman (keyboards and bass).
Regarding the conception of this album, Joel declares: “There were no rehearsals. I wanted to capture the first moments of discovery. I asked each musician to be open to taking risks and to being spontaneous together. Nothing was off limits. Everyone brought grace and generosity to the music.”
An Exquisite Moment is an invitation to poetry, romance, and daydreaming. We are carried away into the composer’s universes as if we were donning multiple costumes before a theatrical rehearsal, without questioning, simply for the pleasure of living or bringing art to life.
This deeply personal and improvisation-rich album is Goodman’s first. He is an Emmy Award-winning composer with over 150 film and television projects under his belt, including many Oscar-nominated and Emmy-winning works. In this epic journey of self-discovery, he collaborates with some of the most accomplished and creative names in jazz.
Joel Goodman further adds: “Although I’ve spent my life composing, most film music can sound incomplete without visuals or a story. An Exquisite Moment, however, is about creating a full listening experience radically different from my film work. I wrote and recorded it simply for the sake of making good music – and I found the process completely liberating.”
This project began its creation in 2021, with some initial ideas that the composer developed in his studio, culminating in this work composed like scenes from a film. We would be delighted to see this project performed live on stage, to fully enjoy the magnificent playing of these musicians whom we all know from various projects.
Of course, Joel Goodman’s work has been deemed “essential” by the editorial teams at Paris-Move and Bayou Blue Radio.
