Blues-Rock |
Like the McGyver on TV, GWYN ASHTON sorts out everything by himself on this lo-fi garage one-man stoner distorto blues-rock album. And as a McGyver-bonus, the tracks have been recorded in the Czech Republic and England, mixed in Australia (Adelaide to be precise) and the mastering was done in England. From the first track, “Metaphysical Journey”, you can’t help but be taken aback. For an old boy like me, it’s like a throwback to the good old days and the good old sound of the 60s and 70s. You’re left wondering if it’s not a Syd Barrett bootleg dug up from God knows where…
Musically, this album brings out everything a one-man band should, it is pure genius with each track being so different, so rich that many guitar players of the 60s and beginning of the 70s, I’m sure, would have liked to produce it… It sometimes feels that this is the solo album Syd Barrett should have made but had neither the time nor the lucidity to record. And just like Syd knew how to, GWYN ASHTON hits us where it matters, straight to the heart as it’s by energising his guitar that he brings out all the emotions imaginable. The tracks themselves cannot really be dissociated from each other but they give the tone of the album which must be listened to as a whole, just like those mythical masterpieces of the 60s and 70s. There’s no embellishment, it just goes straight to the point.
It’s an album which has everything to take your breath away, but for an old boy like me, this is a masterpiece, and I will say it again, a new masterpiece full of nostalgia, which makes you feel 50 years younger.
