Emily Braden – Cannon & Sparrow

As soon as we received this album, we launched it onto our CD player and it began to vibrate through our KRK speakers… Wow! What a voice! What a style! What class! How could I have overlooked such talent until now? To be honest, the jazz production is so dense that to explore it fully, one would need nine lives…
If you do not read French, or if you are an English speaker who is unfamiliar with this great artist, here is her biography: Emily Braden is the winner of the “Best of the Best” vocal competition at Jazzmobile in New York and has twice served as a cultural ambassador under the U.S. Embassy’s “Arts Envoy” program. Hailing from Boise, Idaho, Emily Braden is a singer, songwriter, and lyricist based in Harlem, who effortlessly blends jazz, soul, and pop to capture the hearts of audiences around the world. In New York, she has performed at Birdland Jazz Club, Blue Note Jazz Club (Groove Series), 55 Bar, and Minton’s Playhouse.
This is the first album sent to us by our new partner Orange Grove Publicity, expertly managed by the excellent drummer Ernesto Cervini, whose production house releases around forty albums per year. Emily Braden’s album is absolutely delightful, with a truly interesting vocal technique that explains why she has already received awards. Her originality also makes her a unique artist, drawing on her entire culture, which seems to have no borders. On this album, Emily is brilliantly accompanied by Tatum Greenblatt on trumpet, Freddy Bryant on guitar, Misha Piatigorsky on piano and keyboards, Danton Boller on bass, and Randy Royston on drums. This group is simply incredible, both in terms of rhythm and the delicacy of the arrangements. Emily Braden plays with rhythms and is also a very great performer, conveying a multitude of emotions through her magnificent voice.
This is certainly one of the most interesting and exciting albums of the beginning of 2023, the kind of album that will make history and that we will certainly still be talking about in a few years because of its musical quality. The mixing is also appreciated, with a “studio” sound and a touch of “live” due to the quality of Emily Braden’s recording and mixing. The editors of Paris-Move and Bayou Blue Radio place this album naturally in the category of “Indispensables”.
