Pour “The Astonishing”, 13ème album de Dream Theater, le guitariste John Petrucci avait en tête de reprendre le concept de Metropolis Part 2, datant d’il y a maintenant 15 ans, et il a créé tout un univers avec des personnages fictifs. “The Astonishing” se présente donc sous la forme d’un opéra-rock de 34 titres répartis en deux actes. De quoi faire saliver! On note l’omniprésence du piano de Jordan Rudess, en rupture avec le Dream Theater bien lourd de “Train Of Thought” ou “Octavarium”, ainsi que de nombreux passages orchestraux (“A Tempting Offer”), jazzy ou enrichis de chant féminin, en lien avec les évènements de l’histoire. En revanche, la basse et la batterie sont mises de côté: il manque ce punch dont faisait preuve Mike Portnoy auparavant. Rien ne sera plus jamais pareil sans lui… C’est James LaBrie qui nous a le plus étonnés: il offre des interprétations langoureuses tout en empruntant la voix de chaque personnage de l’histoire. Bien sûr, John Petrucci n’a pas oublié de ponctuer l’album de quelques soli dont il a le secret. On attend maintenant la concrétisation, la sublimation de cette histoire sur scène, d’autant que le groupe a prévenu qu’il jouerait sur la prochaine tournée l’album en intégralité… et rien d’autre!
