This will be the final album of 2024 produced by our friends at A.M.A, and what an album it is!
Imagine a blend of Miles Davis during his bebop era and Joe Zawinul, and you’ll have a faint idea of what to expect. One could even say, without much risk of exaggeration, that Wayne Shorter himself would be the first to applaud such a creation—it’s that captivating and inventive.
To me, jazz is akin to literature, at times even indistinguishable from it. As is often the case with albums produced by our friend Antonio Martino, this one is no exception. I am unfamiliar with the musicians, which makes this a completely new discovery—artists I want to commend and thank here for managing to move me amidst a flood of well-crafted albums. It’s never an easy challenge. Kudos to Milos Bosnic (Bosque Bass), Stevan Milijanovic (Keyboards), Aleksa Milijanovic (Drums), Aleksandar Radulovic (Percussion), Milena Jancuric (Flute), and Aleksandar Petkovic (Soprano Saxophone).
See how the compositions flow, how the keyboards are precisely placed, how the drums are both deliberate and intelligent. Everything about this album brings me back to the best parts of the ’80s and ’90s, when I often found myself behind my camera, filming the biggest stars in jazz. A different time, a different era, thought to be lost.
Founded in 2015 by bassist Milos Bosnic, Bosque Sound Community unites the crème de la crème of Belgrade’s jazz musicians. Their mission? To create original music. Yes, original music—vibrant, thrilling, and intensely crafted. It draws you in, compelling you to admire, to contemplate, to listen attentively, as if navigating a museum filled with treasures.
Comprising five tracks, all composed by Milos himself, the album highlights the talents of Stevan Milijanovic on keyboards, Aleksa Milijanovic on drums, Aleksandar Radulovic on percussion, Aleksandar Petkovic on soprano saxophone, and the sublime artistry of flutist Milena Jancuric.
The compositions are outstanding, truly, with a deeply refined and meticulous melodic sense. This is where art truly shines. And indeed, when looking at the track lengths, it becomes clear that nothing here was crafted with radio play in mind—art before all else! Which, in my view, should always be the rule.
With all these artists at the peak of their craft, 12 Angry Mushrooms by the Bosque Sound Community is a stunningly crafted album, evident right from the first track—the 15-minute centerpiece titled San Francisco Waltz.
As 2024 comes to a close, we are left with a handful of truly exceptional albums, setting the bar high as we step into 2025. One has to wonder what A.M.A will bring us next year. But if all their future releases are of this caliber, the little “Essential” logo will undoubtedly continue to adorn their productions.
