Art Baden – How Much Of is Real ?

This album is, above all, an exploration of a universe, written almost like a novel, and it is important to understand the origins and approach of this artist whose complex musical composition might surprise you. A graduate of the Herbie Hancock Jazz Institute and the Berklee College of Music, Art Baden, a Russian-born tenor saxophonist, presents his captivating debut album, *How Much Of It Is Real?*, which reflects the surreal nature of modern events, contemporary cultural upheavals, and the awe-inspiring reality of working with his idols and mentors. Collaborating with some of jazz’s great innovators, Baden brought this album to life with musical contributions from Jay Anderson (bass), Jeff “Tain” Watts (drums), and his longtime mentor Joe Locke (vibraphone, keyboards). Featuring entirely original pieces by Baden and one original composition by Locke, *How Much Of It Is Real?* is a masterful statement of art and philosophy that urges listeners to think more deeply about everyday mindsets and environments.

Let me tell you, this album makes me want to revisit *The Music of Chance* by Paul Auster, but that’s another matter. Given Art Baden’s educational background, one can clearly see the classical music inspiration in his work, from many of his musical phrases to his choice of instruments and how they are managed. Musical tableaux of a chimerical exhibition, grounded in multiple sound research and foundations, rhythm and sound study seem to be central to this composer’s interests. Baden expresses deep gratitude toward the musicians featured on this album. They are all his mentors, jazz scene veterans, or a combination of both, each with a long-established career that has shaped the current musical landscape. Speaking of Jeff “Tain” Watts, Baden says: “His ability to control the room and the music, and to lead the quartet like an orchestra while giving the players all the freedom they need, is truly remarkable and admirable.” Baden continues to praise his teammates by commending Jay Anderson. “Jay’s extraordinary melodic sensitivity and exceptional professionalism greatly enriched the experience,” says Baden. “At every moment during the recording session, he demonstrated his dedication and professionalism, and it was an honor to see the music come to life thanks to him.” Joe Locke’s long-term mentorship and personal camaraderie with Baden had a profound impact on the young saxophonist, in addition to his striking and tasteful presence on the album. “Beyond his invaluable musical contributions, I deeply appreciate Joe’s friendship and his passion for music,” says Baden. “His help and support over the years made this album possible. His commitment, honesty, and sincerity are greatly appreciated.” Besides his performance on the album, Locke also contributed to the composition of “Silky,” for which he drew inspiration from Baden’s piece “Real People.” The inclusion of this piece symbolizes the cyclical nature of the mentor-student relationship and the beauty that comes from it.

Listening to this album cannot leave anyone indifferent. Although it may not be appreciated by all, as the richness of its musical offerings could overwhelm those who lack a certain cultural background, for others, it is a form of wonderment. The explosion of Baden’s musical writing also shines through in his interpretations. We are presented with music to be experienced, and it is certainly a true joy to hear live. This album is a burning reflection of that, to the point where it is hard to imagine that this is Baden’s debut album, given the artist’s mastery, which is nothing short of fascinating. Undoubtedly, Art Baden is an artist to be reckoned with from now on, and we are thrilled to place this album in the category of our “Essentials.”
