Love Unfold the Moon’s Hidden Promises in Joined Terrains, Apex Emerging is an adventurous and richly textured acoustic quartet recording that brilliantly unites free improvisation with flamenco and Middle Eastern musical traditions.
Some albums seek to entertain; others aim to surprise and captivate, all while challenging our certainties. Hidden Promises in Joined Terrains, Apex Emerging (aka HPJTAE), the debut recording by Love Unfold the Moon, belongs to a far rarer category: it invites the listener on an immersive musical journey where every note is discovered in the very moment it is played. Built upon trust, intuition and a remarkable openness between four exceptional musicians, this is contemporary improvised music at its most compelling and most human.
The quartet is led by guitarist, oudist and composer Mustafa Stefan Dill, a singular artist whose musical identity has always transcended borders. Born in New Mexico to a Mexican mother and a German-Irish father, raised among diverse cultural influences that include Lebanese family traditions in Mexico and formative years in Montpellier, France, Dill naturally developed a musical language that embraces rather than separates cultures. Flamenco, Middle Eastern music, jazz improvisation and contemporary composition all coexist organically in his work.
His first remarkable solo albums, Warning Clothed in Bright Robes of Dawn (1994) and Sangre Del Rio (1997), received international acclaim for their bold fusion of flamenco traditions and free improvisation. After more than three decades as a guitarist, studies in composition at the New England Conservatory under the legendary Joe Maneri, and countless performances throughout Europe and the United States, Dill returns here to his acoustic roots, but with an entirely new collective vision.
Joining him are three outstanding musicians whose complementary personalities make this project so successful. Veteran bassist Ben Wright provides the quartet’s deep harmonic foundation with remarkable sensitivity and restraint. His playing never seeks attention for its own sake; instead, it quietly shapes the music’s direction, allowing the improvisations to breathe naturally.
Violinist Ash Mattia, representing a younger generation of adventurous improvisers, proves to be one of the album’s greatest revelations. His imagination, technical assurance and fearless responsiveness enrich every moment of the recording.
Drummer Thoreau “Thor” Rodriguez completes the ensemble with extraordinary musical maturity. Rather than simply marking time, he constantly colours the music with innovative and subtle textures, shifting dynamics and an instinctive understanding of collective improvisation. His contribution is one of dialogue rather than accompaniment.
Speaking about the origins of the quartet, Mustafa Stefan Dill tells us: “This project brings me back to the acoustic language that shaped my early solo work in Europe, but with new voices pushing it forward. I’ve wanted to extend that vision into a group setting for a long time, but it’s only with the gifts of Ben, Ash and Thor that a group context became possible. Ben and I have our years in the trenches, and Ash and Thor bring a brilliant fresh outlook, along with remarkably wise music decisions. It’s a powerful combination of energies that serves the music so well. I’m blessed.” That feeling of mutual respect and collective exploration permeates every minute of this remarkable recording.
Although presented as three separate tracks, Part 1 (25:45), Part 2 (28:12) and Part 3 (15:31) are best understood as three chapters of a single evolving musical landscape.
Part 1 immediately establishes the quartet’s adventurous spirit. Themes emerge almost imperceptibly before dissolving into spontaneous interaction. Dill’s guitar serves as both storyteller and guide, while the rhythm section and violin continuously reshape the musical terrain.
Part 2 introduces one of the album’s most captivating sonic transformations as Dill exchanges the guitar for the oud. Here the music becomes more introspective, drawing deeply from Middle Eastern traditions without ever abandoning its free improvisational language. Particularly memorable are the intimate dialogues between Dill’s oud and Ash Mattia’s violin, whose timbres intertwine with astonishing naturalness.
Part 3 returns to the guitar but never simply revisits what has come before. Instead, it feels like the culmination of the journey, where the musical ideas developed throughout the previous sections are viewed from a new perspective. The quartet’s remarkable listening skills become especially evident here, as every gesture receives an immediate, thoughtful response from the others. The music breathes collectively, without hierarchy or competition.
One of the greatest achievements of Hidden Promises in Joined Terrains, Apex Emerging lies in its balance between freedom and coherence. Free improvisation can sometimes appear inaccessible to listeners expecting clearly defined melodies or conventional song structures. Yet when musicians possess this level of empathy and shared purpose, improvisation reveals its true nature: not chaos, but collective composition unfolding in real time.
Listeners familiar with Dill’s previous electric project, Love Unfold the Sun, may initially be surprised by the acoustic character of this new ensemble. Yet while the instrumentation is more “intimate”, the emotional intensity remains every bit as powerful. Rather than overwhelming through volume, the quartet captivates through subtlety, nuance and the constant tension between tradition and invention.
Hidden Promises in Joined Terrains, Apex Emerging is not background music. It asks for attentive listening and rewards that attention with a wealth of detail, unexpected beauty and genuine emotional depth. Love Unfold the Moon reminds us that some of the most rewarding artistic experiences are those that unfold gradually, revealing new perspectives with every return.
This is an ambitious, courageous and deeply inspiring debut, one that confirms Mustafa Stefan Dill’s singular artistic vision while introducing a quartet whose future promises to be every bit as fascinating as the hidden promises already revealed here.
